Great system

"I very rarely review purchases, but I have to make an exception on the Apec RO system. We are on a municipal well that has horrible water. We replaced a Whirlpool RO system that was under the sink when we bought the house six years ago that I believe was somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 years old that never really worked well. The quality of the product water was very good, but the pressure at the faucet was always low, and we would only get around a gallon of water out of a four gallon tank, and it took a ridiculously long time to fill. After we determined that this was due to low supply pressure, we decided to replace the unit. We have been using the new system for about two weeks. Night and day difference. This system fills a 16 ounce glass of water in a few seconds, and will fill a two and a half gallon jug in a few minutes. The tank refills very quickly. The build quality of this system is excellent and the installation was simple. I have some plumbing skills, but even someone with no plumbing skills could easily install this system following the excellent step by step instructions provided with rhe system. I didn't time how long it took me, but I don't think it even took an hour from opening the box, to turning the water back on to fill the tank. You will hear a clicking noise from the pump when the tank is filling, but after a day or two it's not really noticeable. In fact, I kind of like the fact that if you don't hear the clicking, you know the tank is full. The product water quality seems to be excellent and it tastes very good. It basically has no taste (or smell) which is the way water is supposed to be. I would recommend this system without hesitation."

Overall, Very Happy

"While I find it hard to take off any stars for this product itself as it is as advertised, I will point out several things Apec Water could do better to get this up to 5 stars for me. 1. The Ro-Perm system is great and definitely helps with poor water pressure. I would like to see them disclose the clicking sound the water pump makes. It was VERY bad/annoying/frequent on the first day and got reasonably better after that. But I wasn't ready for it and you can hear it even if the cabinet doors are closed. 2. The best directions to install the system are on their website/youtube videos and not their paper instructions IMO. I found them both to be different and the video instructions were much more user friendly. Why am I complaining then??? Well, I didn't know they even had video instruction until I started looking on my own. The paperwork in the box should reference them. 3. I don't think the website does a good job of telling you what to expect the water to taste like after it is filtered. I don't think it tastes bad, but everyone in my family complained that it made them thirstier after they drank it, almost dried their mouth out. I had to research this myself and it says that is common when the water is filtered of the good (minerals, etc. ) and bad. If the website would have disclosed this I would have probably purchased a remineralizer for the system although I don't know if they have one for my setup. 4. Last, I inquired about how the tubes jet out from the sides of the system in a way that it makes it hard for me to close my cabinet. I wish they had a product that addresses this (like an elbow) so the tubing could be redirected up or down and not toward the cabinet door. They never got back to me so I guess no product exists."

My new RO system

"I had an APEC RO system in my previous home and was pleased with it. I just moved to a rural area with my own well. I was so glad APEC made a system that would work for my new home. It was easy to install by myself (instructions are clear and easy to follow). My water now tastes clean and good; thankfully no more trips to the store for water."

Used to be a fan

"I had previously written a review of my 12 year old product. Well, we had a failed water pressure regulator and apparently one of the tubes ruptured causing a flood. I'm not blaming APEC at all. I purchased a new system and upgraded to the stainless steel UV kit. It came pre-installed so I was all set, right? Wrong. The UV kit had an improperly installed o-ring and developed a leak after about 4 months. It came suddenly without warning. It ended up causing severe damage to our wood floors, which I am in the middle of fixing. This caused me to lose all confidence in APEC. Never again will I recommend their products and as soon as I find a suitable replacement supplier, I will stop ordering filters from them too. I installed water leak detectors to prevent issues again and if you purchase a system from them, I recommend you do the same and possibly order the auto shut off kit."

Very pleased...

"...with my new kitchen under-sink reverse osmosis system. I purchased it to replace the similar system that I paid someone to install 20 years ago. I installed it myself this time, and I'm so glad I opted for the higher flow-rate option. Everything arrived quickly in one big box."

Great reverse osmosis

"I have been installed this type of reserve osmosis in my NY home for more than 12 years without any problems. I left it when when I moved to NJ. I bought the same system. It is working for 4 years efficiently. I recommended this product."

Added to softened well water (so worth it)

"So honestly the only reason I got this is because I got tired of going outside and getting pre-treatedwell water for my plants. I killed a few after I got a softener because I was unaware. And I just love how fast this was to set up. The pump did fail but was addressed extremely fast. When I move out I will definitely be coming back for the whole system"

12 Year Review

"I bought my RO-Perm system back in 2008 and it's still performing perfectly to this day. I got the UV option and the clear 1st stage filter housing. The only issue I had with my system was a cracked UV inner glass sleeve. It cracked due to me trying to clean it thoroughly. Although it's not normally sold separately Apec was able to sell me just the sleeve.I've had to replace the uv bulb once I've replaced the RO element twice or three times the filters probably about 3 or 4 times (I know they're supposed to be replaced yearly). I've added a 2nd storage tank since the 4 gallon isn't enough but the next size tank is too large to fit under my sink with my garbage disposal. I also added the PH filter. Essentially I have a 7 stage system (UV 3 stage pre filters RO post and PH)Pros:The water tastes greatThe system is extremely well built to have lasted so long with no issues.Cons:It isn't maintenance free. I understand filters need to be changed but there are some hidden maintenance issues:1. You need to re-pressurize the storage tank occasionally. My 4 gallon tanks need to have 7psi when empty. It's not a huge deal but if they aren't properly pressurized you will have a slow flow of water when the tanks get a little low. If you don't have the proper tools to measure and refill this low PSI it can be a pain.2. You need to look out for an issue that arises when the pressure in the RO system is about equal to the water supply line. This causes an undesired reverse effect of the RO waste water bleeding back through the filter (I forget the technical term for this issue but it will happen with ALL RO systems not just the Apec systems). In order to combat this there is a pressure insert that is supposed to activate the refilling at 90% of the system pressure. I didn't install this because the way it works won't solve the issue. The official response to this issue is to essentially use more water (fill at least a gallon of water before closing the faucet after periods of non-active use). Now I'm not talking about days of non use I'm talking about hours. Once the system is filled and pressure is equal to your line pressure the filter will start this reverse bleed. The bleed isn't really a problem sitting there because this bleed water is still in the RO housing and won't bleed into the storage tanks until the next time you use the system which is why they recommend using at least a gallon of water at a time after the filling has stopped. What I do to combat this effectively is to flush the system. I close my storage tanks and flush the system for a few minutes by letting the output faucet run. I then turn off the faucet and open the tanks.Once the tanks are full I turn off the incoming water supply. When my tanks start running low I repeat the process. This keeps my water tasting great otherwise your TDS will rise and your water will start tasting like tap water after a while (if you use less than a gallon per system use). This TDS rise is noticable by taste for me after about 3 weeks but it strongly depends on the quality of your incoming water supply. The worse the quality the faster the taste will be noticable.Recommendations:I would recommend you get the Perm pump system. I don't have low water pressure. I decided to get the perm pump system because the pump helps fill the system faster and fuller. It also allows you to hear it functioning (clicks as the pump works lets me hear how full the system is and when it's completely full)I would also recommend the clear housing for the 1st stage. It allows you to see how your filters are doing instead of guessing with the standard housing (it will save you from purchasing pre-filters unnecessarily).Despite the minor annoyance of the RO flushing I do I don't regret having this system and would gladly recommend it."

Excellent Reliable Drinking Water

"I have had the RO PERM undersink RO unit for drinking water for over 2 years. My home has well water that has to be neutralized from a pH of 5.6 coming out of the ground. So having an RO unit for drinking water is key for family health. This unit delivers for us day in and day out without a hiccup. The permeate pump is a little loud so I built a foam enclosure to muffle the sound a bit and it is better. Overall a well designed and built unit that I would definitely recommend to others. For reference this is not my first undersink RO unit. But after finding APEC I can't imagine choosing from another company."
